Show Time

Several posts ago, I wrote about focal point and how I fixed a compositional mistake. You can read about how I fixed it here. The resulting quilt, Beach Walk,  got juried into the show Florida in Fabric II at the Ruth Funk Center For Textile Arts in Melbourne, Florida. It's a wonderful gallery. The show runs from May 24 to August 23. I'm really happy about it, too, because the juror was Martha Sielman who is the executive director of  SAQA. She will be giving a gallery walk at 1 PM on May 24. If you are in the area, be sure to stop by.
Beach Walk

My quilt, Rise, also got juried into a show. This show isn't a quilt show. It's a multimedia art show. I'm curious to see how many other fiber pieces there will be. The name of the show is Spectrum. It is at Gateway Center for the Arts in DeBary, Florida and runs from April 27 to June 5.
Rise

Meanwhile, I've started hand-quilting my small piece from the on-line class I'm taking and I've started making two wheelchair covers and I've started a design for a large quilt with a rock cairn and a tree.
I'm linking this to Off The Wall Friday where you can find other art quilt blogs. Please make comments on their posts to let them know you stopped by.

  1. Living on Lake Erie this certainly invokes the feeling of the summer time lake. The palette brings to mind not sand and surf but also beach glass hunting.I especially love Rise.

    1. Thank you for your compliments. I love beach walking. Our beaches don't have too much beach glass, alas. The beach glass I have is from beaches from far away.

    1. Thanks. When I was trying to develop my style I wrote a list of words of feelings I wanted to convey and "calm" was high on the list.

    1. Blue is by far my favorite color and I like to use oranges with it. In this case, I decided to use some gray to capture the feeling of the area where the surf and sand meet.

  5. Oh, I have a question for you - I see you do a facing on your quilts or at least by the photo it looks that way. I have just done my first facing and it's fine but now how to hang it? I usually bind and use the triangle method for dowels on the back but with a facing can't do that. What do you do to hang? Thank you :-)

    1. I used a pillow-case binding. I did all of the quilting on only the top with the batting only. Then I squared it all up with the rotary cutter. Then I cut a backing the exact size and shape as the top/batting. Next, I cut 1/8 inch off the back all around the 4 edges. Pinned right sides together and sewed a 1/4 inch seam all around leaving an opening to turn it right side out. Then I turned it right side out, pressed it, hand sewed it shut. Did some hand embroidery and extra quilting here and there through the whole quilt sandwich.
Sewed a regular 4-inch hanging sleeve onto the back. If you need directions for this, or more explanation email me.

  7. There is so much to study with these quilts. I was particularly drawn to the lines - created in so many different ways and used both abstractly and representationally.

    1. Thank you, that's a wonderful compliment. I'm having a good time transferring patterns from one part of the quilt to another.

    1. Thank you, Marilyn. Beach walking is such a peaceful and calming experience and I'm glad I conveyed that in the quilt. And there's something about rock cairns that makes you pause and contemplate. They just seem to have a calming effect.

    1. Judy, that is a lovely compliment because, if you remember, from when I was part of the Visioning Project, one of my goals was to find my voice. I think I have. Every now and then I get a calling to make a quilt outside that voice and I do make it, but then I come back.

  10. Beautiful pieces Regina, the tranquility of Rise makes it my favourite but I could also spend hours looking at the movement and energy in Beach Walk too. Both very deserving exhibition pieces - well done!

  11. Such nice comments, Teri. Thank you so much. I got a rejection notice on a quilt a few weeks ago so this encouragement is timely.
